For years clay was extracted here by a local company from Valga, resulting in an enormous hole in the ground, which was gradually filled by water by means of natural processes until it formed the largest manmade lagoon in Pontevedra province, with an area of more than 3 ha and a depth of 20 metres. A singular cable system used to be employed here to transport the products in skips to a jetty on the Ulla River.
Today, this large wetland is a regular stopover for different kinds of migratory birds, such as ducks and swans, as well as the home of amphibians and fish.
The pleasant trail surrounding it, as well as the footbridges, benches, tables and pontoons for enjoying “catch and release” fishing, make this place an excellent leisure option.
